PIONEERS EXECUTE IN 80-68 VICTORY
DENTON , Texas – Texas Woman’s University began its 2005-06 season with an 80-68 exhibition win over Southern Nazarene University at Magee Arena.
“For the first time out I was very pleased. We executed decently on offense and worked hard on defense to take away their first look,” head coach Rene Hanebutt said. “More than anything I was happy that we out rebounded them. That has been our focus this week. We must limit opponents to one shot.”
The Pioneers led for the majority of the game. Kristal Robeson started the scoring with a three-pointer at the 18:48 mark. Courtney Colmer picked up the offense from that point, scoring all 15 of her points in the first half. TWU shot over 50 percent from the field to build a 12-point lead at halftime.
In the second half, TWU built a 19-point advantage. The Pioneers controlled the boards with 25 of their 47 rebounds. Margaret Wimbish led the offense with 13 of her game-high 22 points in the period.
“We have to learn where we want the ball to be and take care of it. 24 turnovers are very unreasonable,” Hanebutt added.
TWU had four players in double-digits led by Wimbish. Robeson tallied 16 points in addition to a game-high 13 rebounds. Browning added 15 points as well.
“Kristal is a dynamic player. She came out well and set the tempo on offense and defense. The team goes as she does,” Hanebutt stated. “Our shooters, Ashley, Courtney and Kristal, shot the ball really well. Margaret got to the free-throw line, she is our inside presence.”
The Pioneers continue exhibition play against the Oklahoma Flyers on Nov. 12 at 2:00 p.m. Admission to the exhibition games is free.
