WILLIAMSON JOINS PIONEERS BASKETBALL STAFF

DENTON , Texas – Margie Williamson has been named assistant basketball coach effective immediately, Head Coach Rene Hanebutt announced today.

Williamson was the head women’s basketball coach at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor before she resigned in June to pursue her doctoral degree in sports administration at TWU. She began her studies in August and the assistant coach’s position became vacant in September. After a national search, Hanebutt found her new assistant already in Denton.

“This is a great opportunity for me to pursue a degree and coach,” Williamson said. “It was a fortunate situation to be in the right place at the right time.”

Williamson’s responsibilities will include recruiting and team travel in addition to coaching with the Pioneers.

“Margie has a great reputation and many years of experience at the collegiate level,” Hanebutt said. “She is a proven recruiter with a vast knowledge of x’s and o’s.”

A Deer Park, Texas, native Williamson was a four-year captain and starter at point guard for UMHB. After her playing career, she coached at Killeen, Crawford and Richland High Schools. Williamson was an assistant coach at Baylor University under Sonja Hogg for two years before taking over at UMHB in May 2000.

At UMHB, Williamson had a career record of 82-45 in five seasons at the helm. She took the Lady Crusaders, a member of the NCAA Division III American Southwest Conference, to the league tournament twice and was the ASC Coach of the Year in 2000-01. She also had 12 players selected to the all-academic conference team.

Williamson graduated from UMHB in 1993 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. She earned her master’s degree in education with an emphasis in sport management from Baylor in 2002.

She replaces Michael Bell who resigned recently for personal reasons.
