HANEBUTT TAPPED TO LEAD THE PIONEERS
DENTON,
Texas – Former Bowie and Texas Tech standout
Rene Hanebutt has been named head basketball coach at Texas
Woman’s University, Director of Athletics Chalese Connors
announced today.
“Rene Hanebutt has such great enthusiasm and energy,” Connors said. “She
came in for her interview with a detailed plan for this program to be successful
athletically, academically and in the community. She is drawing on her experiences
as a successful collegiate basketball player who was taught by one of the best,
Marsha Sharp. Rene has translated those experiences and her passion for the game
into her career. She is familiar with our conference and with Texas high schools.
She’s a great fit for us and I am eager for her to get started. There’s
a lot of work to be done.”
Hanebutt inherits a squad that finished 10-16 overall and 3-11 in Lone Star
Conference last year. She is the seventh head coach at TWU since they joined
Division II in 1983-84. The Pioneers have not had a winning record since 1989-90.
“I am excited about the opportunity to lead this program. TWU is a wonderful
University that is committed to educating the youth of today. I am proud to now
be affiliated with this University,” Hanebutt said. “TWU has all
the intangibles to have a great woman’s basketball program. We will recruit
quality student-athletes that will excel in the classroom as well as on the basketball
court.”
The Bowie, Texas, native joins the Pioneers after coaching stints at Tarleton
State and Decatur High School. She was an assistant basketball coach with the
TexAnns from 2001-02 before leading Decatur to two district championships in
three seasons. Hanebutt earned District 7-3A Coach of the Year accolades in
2003 and 2005. She was also the Denton Record-Chronicle Coach of the Year in
2003.
Hanebutt had a stellar playing career at Bowie and Texas Tech. After leading
Bowie High School to the 1995 3A State Championship as a senior and being named
the Class 3A and USA Today Texas High School Player of the Year, she joined
Marsha Sharp’s program at Tech.
Hanebutt was a four-year starter for the Lady Raiders and is Tech’s all-time
leader in three-pointers made with 282. She was part of a Lady Raiders team
that won three conference championships including the Southwest Conference
title in 1996 and the Big XII Conference regular season and tournament crowns
in 1998 and 1999.
Hanebutt earned all-Big 12 second team honors as a senior
and third-team recognition as a sophomore and junior. Additionally, she was
named to the all-conference academic first team throughout her career.
Hanebutt was inducted into the Texas Basketball Hall of Fame in November of
2001. She also had her high school basketball jersey retired and is a member
of the all-time Texas Tech Lady Raider team.
“
Rene will have an immediate impact in recruiting,” Connors added. “She
has such a positive attitude about the future of TWU basketball with the talent
we currently have and the talent she can bring in.”
After graduating, Hanebutt worked for PNB Financial before starting her coaching
career. She is active in various community activities including the United
Way, American Cancer Society, Children’s Miracle Network, Make a Wish
Foundation, Special Olympics and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
Hanebutt received bachelor’s degree in political science from Texas Tech
in 1998. She will graduate with her master’s degree in sports administration
from Tech this summer.
