PIONEERS ADVANCE TO THE SEMIFINALS WITH A 65-51 WIN OVER THE BULLDOGS
WEATHERFORD, Okla. – A barrage of three-pointers led Texas Woman’s University to an early lead and a 65-51 win over Southwestern Oklahoma State in first-round action of the Lone Star Conference Postseason Championship Tournament in front of 850 fans at Rankin Williams Arena.
The Pioneers (14-13) advance to the semifinals for the first time since the 1989-90 season and will play Angelo State on March 3 at 8:00 p.m. in Canyon, Texas. West Texas A&M, the top seed in the South Division, earned the right to host the semifinals and championship game with a win over Cameron.
“We had an incredible start. We shot the ball and defended them so well. It was huge for us not to let them come out and use the momentum,” head coach Rene Hanebutt said. “We took the early lead and never trailed.”
Ashley Browning started the ambush of three’s just five seconds into the game. TWU took an early 20-3 lead at the 13:14 mark with five more three-pointers including two by Browning. Margaret Wimbish, Maggy Deweber and Courtney Colmer also hit a long ball.
SWOSU couldn’t match TWU’s offensive firepower. The Bulldogs didn’t score its second basket until the 12:45 mark.
“We had to stop Julie Dawson. She is a really good player and we held her to only seven points. Ashley defended her extremely well,” Hanebutt added. “At this time of the year, you can’t shut them down but they need to earn their points.”
TWU entered intermission with a 29-23 lead. The Pioneers made 11 of 26 field goals (42.3 percent) including six of nine three-pointers (66.7 percent) in the first half.
Wimbish kept the Pioneers in the driver’s seat in the second half. The junior had 16 of her game-high 24 points in the final 20 minutes. She added eight boards, three assists and four blocks.
Colmer, Browning and Deweber also scored in double figures for TWU. Colmer added 14 points, five rebounds and nine assists. Browning had 13 points. Deweber recorded 14 points and five caroms.
“Margaret had a big game for us. We made eight three’s so they couldn’t double her,” Hanebutt said. “ Angelo State is a great team and well coached. We just played them and will have to be ready.”
The Pioneers and Rambelles have played twice this season with ASU winning both contests.
In other LSC action tonight West Texas A&M beat Cameron, 93-61; Texas A&M-Commerce nipped Tarleton State, 60-59 and Angelo State defeated Northeastern State, 64-52, to proceed in the tournament.
