PIONEERS IN POSTSEASON PLAY WITH WIN AND COIN FLIP

ABILENE, Texas – Texas Woman’s University put together a total team effort in a 72-60 win over Abilene Christian to force a coin flip tonight to decide the fourth seed in the Lone Star Conference South Division.

The Pioneers (13-13, 6-8) and Wildcats (12-15, 6-8) are both tied for the fourth and final spot in the LSC postseason tournament.  The two teams have split head-to-head meetings and have identical results against every other division opponent making a coin flip the tie-breaker.

TWU won the coin flip late Saturday night and will play at Southwestern Oklahoma in Weatherford, Okla., at 7:00 p.m. in first-round action on Feb. 28. The Pioneers beat the Bulldogs, 64-53, earlier this season.

The Pioneers last trip to the postseason was in 2002-03. TWU lost to Northeastern State, 42-51.

“We put ourselves in the position to make a big step in this program.  The win gave us the chance of playing in the postseason,” head coach Rene Hanebutt said.  “It was an awesome game.  Everybody on the team played well offensively and defensively.  There was not one individual on the floor that didn’t play big time and make tremendous plays.”

The Pioneers charged out to a 38-26 halftime lead.  TWU had just four turnovers with three players in double figures in the first 20 minutes.

Courtney Colmer (13 points), Margaret Wimbish (12 points) and Ashley Browning (11 points) led TWU to the early lead.

ACU attempted a second half comeback but TWU held onto its 12-point advantage.
“I could not be prouder of the team.  They competed so hard and had the look of we will not get beat,” Hanebutt added.  “Kelley (Humphries), Ashley and Courtney were stellar tonight.”

Browning finished with a game-high 23 points.  Wimbish and Colmer each added 21 and 19 points, respectively.
