PIONEERS FALL IN DEFENSIVE BATTLE
SAN ANGELO , Texas – Texas Woman’s University fell to Angelo State 54-39 in a low scoring Lone Star Conference contest at the Junell Center/Stephens Arena.
The Pioneers (12-13, 5-8) didn’t have a player score in double figures in a defensive battle with the Rambelles (19-7, 10-3).
“It was crazy. I couldn’t ask for them to play any harder. We spent so much energy on defense and didn’t have it on offense,” head coach Rene Hanebutt said. “I can’t be upset or frustrated when they played so hard and we held them to 54 points. I am really proud of them. It was close until the last seven minutes when we got tired.”
ASU led by one point, 17-16, at intermission. Both teams struggled from the field and through some long scoring droughts. TWU got on the board at the 17:46 mark with a Margaret Wimbish lay-up. An Ashley Browning three-pointer was the only basket for the next 7:47.
The Rambelles outscored the Pioneers, 37-23, in the second half for the victory. ASU ended the game with a 15-9 run.
TWU had four players with eight points apiece. Whitney Bracey came off the bench with eight points and nine rebounds. Wimbish, Browning and Maggy Deweber each added eight points as well.
The Pioneers shot a season-low 45.5 percent (5-11) from the free throw line. TWU ended the game 15 of 47 (31.9 percent) from the field.
“Whitney played extremely well. She had her best game,” Hanebutt said. “Our free throw shooting didn’t help us tonight. We missed one and ones down the stretch.”
TWU closes out the regular season at Abilene Christian on Feb. 25 at 4:00 p.m. Heading into tonight’s games, the Pioneers were in a three-way tie with Midwestern State and ACU for fourth place in the South Division and the final spot in the postseason tournament. MSU fell to West Texas A&M tonight and ACU hosts Texas A&M-Kingsville on Thursday.
