PIONEERS DROP KEY CONFERENCE CONTEST
DENTON , Texas – A sluggish second half cost Texas Woman’s University in a 63-51 loss to Midwestern State in a key Lone Star Conference South Division game on Senior Day at Magee Arena.
Now the Pioneers (12-12, 5-7) and Mustangs (11-14, 5-7) are tied for fourth place and the last spot in the league postseason tournament. Abilene Christian is right behind them with a 4-7 LSC record with a game tonight at Eastern New Mexico.
“We need to have people step up and accept their roles on this team, whether it is to rebound, score or play defense. When people don’t fulfill their roles we have a tough time winning,” head coach Rene Hanebutt said. “When it comes to crunch time they aren’t doing it and with our numbers they have to do their job.”
TWU took a three-point lead into halftime. Margaret Wimbish paced the Pioneers with 14 points, making five of seven field goals, and six rebounds.
The second half was a different story. The Pioneers were eight of 29 from the field (27.6 percent) for 19 points. The Mustangs on the other hand put 34 points on the board making 10 of 26 shots (38.5 percent).
“MSU played pretty well. They had people step up and play huge for them and we didn’t. It is frustrating because we won at MSU,” Hanebutt added. “Now we have our work cut out for us next week.”
Wimbish finished with 17 points and nine rebounds. Courtney Colmer added 12 points. Ashley Browning and Maggy Deweber both had nine points.
The Pioneers conclude the regular season on the road with games at Angelo State (Feb. 22) and Abilene Christian (Feb. 25).
