TEXANNS OUT REBOUND PIONEERS FOR WIN

DENTON , Texas – Extra opportunities cost Texas Woman’s University in a 64-72 loss to Tarleton State in Lone Star Conference action at Magee Arena.

The Pioneers (12-11, 5-6) held the Texanns (17-7, 9-2) to 35.6 percent shooting from the field. TSU negated poor shooting by out rebounding TWU by 10 (39-29).

“We came out and defensively did a very good job holding them to 27 points in the first half. The thing that kept hurting us was second and third opportunities. They are very physical,” head coach Rene Hanebutt said. “I thought we were good after cutting the lead to four. Then they got three offensive rebounds in a row. That broke our back.”

TSU took a three-point advantage into halftime. Both teams struggled offensively. TWU shot 37.5 percent (9-24) from the field and missed all seven three-pointers in the first half. TSU shot just 25 percent (8-32) but connected on 4 of 11 three-pointers.

The Texanns came out of intermission on fire to build a 19-point lead with a 26-10 run. The Pioneers trimmed that to four points with 3:18 remaining in the game with a 25-10 flurry.

After an Ashley Browning jumper, TSU capitalized on a long possession with three offensive rebounds. Margaret Wimbish added a free throw before the Texanns ended the game by making seven of 10 free throws.

“The momentum was in our favor at the end. It hurts us because five players played 30 or more minutes,” Hanebutt added. “I was impressed with how they came back after being down in second half. They could have folded but didn’t.”

Wimbish led the Pioneers with a game-high 19 points with six rebounds. Courtney Colmer added 18 points and seven rebounds. Maggy Deweber was also in double figures with 11.

Next, TWU hosts Midwestern State in its home finale on Feb. 18 at 3:00 p.m. on Senior Day.

“We’re holding the fourth-place spot in the league. We are still a game ahead of ACU. We need them to get beat so our game is not a must win for us,” Hanebutt said. “The game with Midwestern is important on Saturday.”
