TWU WINS IN OVERTIME
DENTON , Texas – Texas Woman’s University held off Tiana Bryant and Eastern New Mexico for a 68-60 overtime victory at Magee Arena.
The Pioneers (12-10, 5-5) needed the win to keep sole possession of fourth place in the Lone Star Conference South Division. The top four teams in each division qualify for the league postseason tournament.
“I’m glad that we won. We needed it but I don’t feel like we deserved it,” head coach Rene Hanebutt said. “We came out flat and didn’t execute on offense. ENMU did the same things defensively to us that they did in our first meeting.”
TWU was plagued by turnovers and poor shooting in the first half. The Pioneers had 14 miscues and just eight field goals. ENMU’s Bryant led the Zias to a 28-21 halftime lead with 15 points.
The Pioneers mounted a comeback late in the game. Courtney Colmer hit a jumper to tie the game with 4:51 remaining. Ashley Browning followed with a basket.
The Zias went on to make five of six free throws. A missed free throw by Bryant with nine seconds left put TWU down by three.
After a Zia timeout, Browning in bounded the ball to Maggy Deweber at the top of the key. Deweber took a bounce before hitting a long three-pointer to tie the game at the buzzer.
“We wanted Maggy to shoot the ball because they were focusing on Courtney. Coach Williamson drew up the play and it went as planned. We sent Courtney into the corner and they shifted leaving Maggy open,” Hanebutt added.
TWU controlled the overtime period en route to the win. The Pioneers made five of six field goals (83.3 percent) including four three-pointers.
“We saved our offense for overtime and shot the ball really well,” Hanebutt said. “That was the only time we were in control of the game. I’ll take an ugly win over a pretty loss any day.”
Colmer and Browning led the team with double-double efforts. Colmer had 19 points and 11 rebounds for her first double-double of the year. Browning added 16 points and 10 caroms for her third of the season. Deweber and Margaret Wimbish each added 14 and 13 points, respectively.
The Zias fell to 9-15 overall and 1-9 in the LSC. Bryant finished with a game-high 25 points on 10 of 18 shooting.
Next, TWU hosts Tarleton State on Feb. 16 at 7:00 p.m. It is Faculty/Staff Appreciation and Pioneer Pride & Pizza Night. All fans wearing Maroon and White will receive free pizza from CiCi’s while supplies last.
