PIONEERS WIN MATCH-UP WITH ZIAS
PORTALES , N.M. – Texas Woman’s University dominated the second half to beat Eastern New Mexico 65-51 in Lone Star Conference action and end a three-game losing skid.
The win kept the Pioneers (11-11, 4-4) in the top half of the league standings.
“This was a big win. We are now alone in fourth place in the South division,” head coach Rene Hanebutt said. “We changed things up and put together a total team game. I am proud of the team.”
The game featured two of the top three scorers in the conference, TWU’s Margaret Wimbish and ENMU’s Tiana Bryant. The Zias (9-12, 1-6) put Bryant on Wimbish early limiting her to two points and one shot attempt in the first 20 minutes of action.
“We played pretty well in the second half. We defended them well and executed down the stretch,” Hanebutt said. “They put Tiana on Margaret limiting her shots early. Margaret held her composure and played her way through the game. Tiana is very athletic and talented.”
TWU took a three-point lead into halftime. Courtney Colmer had 14 of her game-high 21 points in the first half.
ENMU took a 46-45 lead with 6:26 left. The Pioneers ended the game with a 20-5 run en route to the victory.
“This was the best game that Courtney has played all year. I talked about people stepping up and she responded,” Hanebutt said. “We also got key minutes from the bench.”
Wimbish added 17 points and nine rebounds. Ashley Browning had nine points.
Next, the Pioneers begin a four-game homestand against West Texas A&M on Feb. 9 at 7:00 p.m. on “Maroon Out” night.
