PIONEERS COME UP SHORT AGAINST NO. 19 LADY BUFFS
CANYON, Texas – Texas Woman’s University was defeated by No. 19 West Texas A&M 87-63 in Lone Star Conference South Division play.
The Pioneers (10-9, 3-4) struggled with the Lady Buffs (16-3, 5-1) defensive pressure. WTAMU improved to 9-0 at home and is on a 13-game home winning streak.
“The problem was transition defense. We did a good job of defending them in the half court,” head coach Rene Hanebutt said. “We didn’t work hard enough. I am disappointed at the way we competed. Lack of discipline allowed them to run up and down the court.”
TWU trailed the entire game as WTAMU sprinted out to a 20-6 lead. The Lady Buffs turned 13 turnovers into 19 points in the first half. At halftime, the Pioneers were down 28-43.
“They pressured us the whole game forcing turnovers. Turning the ball over in the first two possessions of the game set the tempo,” Hanebutt said.
In the second half, Courtney Colmer got the Pioneers within 11 at the 12:55 mark. WTAMU reacted with an 8-0 run including consecutive three-pointers en route to the win.
Margaret Wimbish recorded a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Ashley Browning added 17 points and Maggy Deweber had 11.
“Maggy played well. She reached double figures and is doing what we want her to do offensively,” Hanebutt added. “Ashley shot the ball well.”
WTAMU had five players in double figures and improved to 32-1 all-time against TWU including its 12th win in a row.
TWU stays on the road for a match-up with Eastern New Mexico on Feb. 4 at 8:00 p.m.
