WILDCATS NIP PIONEERS IN OVERTIME
DENTON , Texas – Texas Woman’s University senior Courtney Colmer hit a long three-pointer as time expired to send the game into overtime but Abilene Christian controlled the extra five minutes for the 84-79 win.
The Pioneers (10-8, 3-3) dropped its second straight Lone Star Conference South division game. The Wildcats (9-10, 3-3) won its third in a row after starting league play with three losses.
“I’m sick for our kids. They battled every single possession. We just went out and competed,” head coach Rene Hanebutt said. “I was impressed with the effort.”
After taking a 40-37 lead into halftime, TWU watched ACU build a nine-point lead in the second half. The Wildcats hit back-to-back three pointers out of the gate to take the lead.
TWU came back to tie the game with an 8-0 run starting at the 4:37 mark. Wimbish started the rally with an old-fashioned three-point play with a jumper and free throw.
Whitney Bracey followed with three more points on a jumper and free throw. Wimbish added two free throws to tie the game at 66-66.
Colmer capped the Pioneer comeback with a three from the top of the key to tie the game as the buzzer sounded.
The Wildcats outscored the Pioneers 15-10 in the overtime period. ACU hit two jumpers and a three-pointer before TWU scored. After two misses and two turnovers, Colmer hit a trey at the 1:33 mark.
Wimbish and Kristal Robeson both fouled out in overtime hampering the TWU offense. ACU hit a three-pointer and five of six free throws to close out the game.
The Pioneers were a perfect 11-for-11 (100 percent) from the line tying the team game record for free throw percentage. During the 1986-87 season, TWU made 10 of 10 free throws. The Wildcats made 15 of 26 attempts from the charity stripe.
“A huge indicator was the free throw attempts. ACU went to the line more than we did,” Hanebutt added. “Whitney (Bracey) played well for us off the bench.”
All five Pioneer starters scored in double figures led by Wimbish 21 points and 11 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season. Ashley Browning (16), Colmer (14), Robeson (12) and Maggy Deweber (11) rounded out the scoring.
ACU picked up its 29 th win in 36 meetings all-time between the two teams.
Next, TWU travels to West Texas A&M on Feb. 2 for a LSC game beginning at 7:00 p.m.
