PIONEERS FALL TO RAMBELLES IN KEY CONFERENCE MATCH-UP
DENTON , Texas – In a battle for third place in the Lone Star Conference South Division, Angelo State proved why they are the best shooting team in the league defeating Texas Woman’s University, 78-69, in front of 527 fans at Magee Arena.
TWU (10-7, 3-2) and ASU (13-5, 4-1) entered the game with identical 3-1 records in the LSC South division standings. The Rambelles were shooting 45.4 percent from the field this season. ASU made 34 of 63 shots (54 percent) in the game.
“I didn’t feel like we defended them that poorly. We were in their faces and they lit us up,” head coach Rene Hanebutt said. “They shot 59.4 percent from the field in the first half. That is hard to beat. They post everyone up. We didn’t do a great job of defending the paint.”
The Rambelles made 19 of 32 (59.4 percent) shots including four of five (80 percent) three-pointers to build a 16-point lead at halftime. The Pioneers also gave up 14 points off eight turnovers in the first half.
TWU took an early 2-0 lead with a Margaret Wimbish lay-up before ASU took control. The Rambelles went on a 12-3 run to lead by 14 with 7:24 remaining in the first half. The Pioneers trimmed that to nine points with a Courtney Colmer three-pointer at the 6:11 mark.
TWU got the lead to single digits five times in the second half. Whitney Bracey hit a jumper with 11:46 remaining to cut the lead to seven. The Rambelle’s Britinee Davis answered with a three-pointer to start a 7-0 ASU run.
The Pioneers ended the game with a 11-0 run in the final 3:27. First, Kristal Robeson hit a trey. Ashley Browning followed with another three-pointer. Jennifer Schilb added a jumper and Robeson added one more three with 27 seconds on the clock.
“We changed up our defense a little bit which frustrated them. That allowed us to get back in the game,” Hanebutt added. “I thought we were going to make a run at the end but they came right back. They are a great team.”
TWU had four players in double figures led by Wimbish with a game-high 19 points and seven rebounds. Browning added 14 points. Robeson had 12 points, seven assists and six rebounds. Maggy Deweber had 10 points and five boards off the bench.
“Maggy and Jen came in and played really well,” Hanebutt said.
