TURNOVERS LEAD TO TWU LOSS
STEPHENVILLE, Texas – Turnovers cost Texas Woman’s University a chance at remaining unbeaten in Lone Star Conference play in a 53-67 loss at Tarleton State.
The Pioneers (9-6, 2-1) had 30 turnovers which led to 32 Texann (11-5, 3-0) points. The 30 mistakes matched TWU’s season-high.
“I felt like we came out and didn’t even resemble a basketball team. We got beat in transition and made poor decisions offensively,” head coach Rene Hanebutt said. “We continued to make bad decisions over and over.”
In the first 20 minutes, the Pioneers had 16 miscues which the Texanns turned into 13 points to lead at halftime, 37-21.
The Pioneers led for the first eight minutes of the game. Margaret Wimbish, the second leading scorer in the league, put TWU on the board with a jumper in the paint.
TSU took the lead at the 12:00 minute mark and never looked back making five three-pointers in the first half. Junior Katie Crawford had three of them on consecutive Texann possessions.
TWU fought back but couldn’t overcome the halftime deficit. TSU built a 25-point margin five minutes into the second half.
The Pioneers rallied in the final minutes of the game. TWU pulled within eight points at the 1:29 mark on a Kristal Robeson trey.
After calling a timeout, the Pioneers came out in full-court press. TSU responded with a lay-up. The Texanns closed out the game by making five of six free throws.
“In the second half, we started playing more like ourselves. We hit shots and executed offensively. On defense we changed it up,” Hanebutt added. “Honestly I expected us to come in and play well. We had the “deer in the headlights” look tonight.”
TWU had three players in double figures led by Courtney Colmer and Wimbish with 17 points each. Robeson added 15 points and seven rebounds.
Next, the Pioneers travel to Midwestern State on Jan. 21. Tip-off is at 7:00 p.m.
