WIMBISH SCORES 33 IN LOSS TO COMMERCE
DENTON , Texas – Texas Woman’s University fell to an athletic Texas A&M-Commerce team, 76-70, despite a season-high 33 points from junior Margaret Wimbish in Lone Star Conference crossover action.
Wimbish led the Pioneers (9-5, 2-0) out of the gates with 17 points in the first half. Wimbish made six of eight field goals and four free throws before intermission. The rest of the team was five-for-23 with 12 points.
“Margaret was really impressive on offense. She can score in so many different ways and is difficult to defend,” head coach Rene Hanebutt said. “We need others to step up and put the ball in the hole as well. We started the season shooting so well. I knew it would plateau off but we are better shooters than we showed tonight.”
The Lions (8-5) countered with a balanced effort as four players reached double figures to win its third straight game.
“Commerce is so athletic. They react well and can do things that other teams can’t,” Hanebutt added. “I was pleased we out rebounded them and took care of the ball.”
Both teams missed shots early in the game. TWU built a 14-8 lead at the 13:56 mark with 12 points from Wimbish.
Commerce fought back and took the lead, 20-19, four minutes later. Kristal Robeson and Browning each hit a three-pointer to put TWU ahead with 3:23 left. The Lions finished the half with a nine consecutive points for an eight-point advantage.
TWU started the second half with five turnovers in the first 5:19 including four consecutive miscues. Commerce looked like they had closed the door on TWU with an old-fashioned three-point play with 3:18 remaining. Althea Byfield made a lay-up, was fouled and hit a free throw to put the Lions on top by nine.
Maggy Deweber brought TWU within two points with a trey at the 1:25 mark. After a timeout, the Pioneers tried to foul Commerce but the Lions were perfect from the free throw line (six of six) to end the game.
“We called a timeout and decided to foul Wilson. She shoots around 50 percent from the line,” Hanebutt said. “We had opportunities to win and even tie the game. We got the shots but just didn’t make them.”
Robeson added 13 points, seven rebounds and five assists.
The Pioneers have a seven-day break before a LSC contest at Tarleton State on Jan. 19 at 7:00 p.m.
