PIONEERS DEFEAT JAVELINAS AGAIN
DENTON , Texas – Texas Woman’s University stayed perfect in Lone Star Conference action with a 63-41 win over Texas A&M-Kingsville at Magee Arena.
The Pioneers (9-4, 2-0) never trailed to beat the Javelinas (3-11, 0-2) for the second time this season. On Dec. 29 TWU beat TAMUK, 64-57, in Kingsville.
“In the first half we played well. We came out and shot well which is good after the past two games,” head coach Rene Hanebutt added. “We rebounded extremely well. I told the team that we had to get offensive boards.”
TWU built an 11-point lead at halftime with some timely three-pointers. The Pioneers made five three’s with each one stopping a Javelina surge.
Courtney Colmer made a lay-up to give TWU an early 13-4 lead. TAMUK fought its way back to within a point but Colmer hit a three on the Pioneers next possession.
The Javelinas rallied again to within a point before Maggy Deweber made a three-pointer at the 7:57 mark. Ashley Browning was the next Pioneer to hit a three followed by Kristal Robeson. Margaret Wimbish added a trey to propel TWU into intermission.
Both teams turned up the defensive effort in the second half keeping the scoring at a minimum. TWU made just six field goals in the final 20 minutes. The Pioneers scored its first point of the half at the 11:12 mark on a Whitney Moore free throw.
“Sometimes we are in and out of a fog. We were in it in after halftime,” Hanebutt added. “It was nice to have four players in double figures.”
Wimbish recorded a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds to lead TWU. Robeson added 12 points and seven assists. Browning and Colmer each had 11 points as well.
The Pioneers improved to 12-24 all-time against the Javelinas.
TWU wraps up non-conference play hosting Texas A&M-Commerce on Jan. 12 at 7:00 p.m.
