PIONEERS STRUGGLE OFFENSIVELY, FALL TO AGGIES
LAWTON, Okla. – Texas Woman’s University was defeated 39-65 in its worst offensive showing of the season against Cameron University in Lone Star Conference Crossover action before 350 fans.
The Pioneers (7-4) offense struggled to score points against the Aggies (6-6). TWU made just 12 of 59 field goals (20.3 percent). The Pioneers have been shooting a league best 47.9 percent and averaging 65.6 points this season.
“We have three people shooting over 50 percent from the field. For all of them to be so off in the same game is amazing to me,” head coach Rene Hanebutt said. “In the first half we shot 20 percent including one of 14 from the three-point line but still hung in there defensively. It is so hard to work on the defensive end when nothing is falling for you at all.”
The Aggies jumped out to an early 5-2 lead. The Pioneers answered with an 8-2 spurt for a lead with 11 minutes remaining in the first half. Cameron responded with a 9-0 run to take the lead for the duration of the game.
Cameron took a nine-point lead into halftime but TWU made just five baskets in the final 20 minutes of the game. Maggy Deweber put the Pioneers within six points early with a three-pointer. That was followed by a 10-0 Cameron run en route to the win.
“I think we got this one out of the way. Cameron has a good shooting gym. It is not real open,” Hanebutt added. “Nothing would fall. It didn’t matter who was shooting. Hopefully it won’t happen again.”
Margaret Wimbish was the only TWU player in double figures with 14 points and nine rebounds. Five other Pioneers scored led by Ashley Browning with seven points.
TWU plays at Southwestern Oklahoma State on Jan. 7 at 2:00 p.m.
