PIONEERS WIN THIRD STRAIGHT OVER CARDINALS
DENTON , Texas – Texas Woman’s University earned its second victory over Incarnate Word this season beating the Cardinals, 72-58, as Margaret Wimbish led the team with 26 points.
The Pioneers (7-3, 1-0) took advantage of 24 Cardinal (2-10) fouls to make a season-high 31 free throws. The Pioneers shot 79.5 percent from the charity stripe with just eight misses in 39 attempts.
“We did okay. We have to get to the point where we execute every possession regardless of the score. We tend to ease up when we are ahead and don’t have that killer instinct yet,” head coach Rene Hanebutt said. “We also turned the ball over way too much. There is no excuse for that. Overall, I’m glad that we won but we need to take care of the ball.”
Both teams emerged from the Holiday break strong. TWU started the game with a Wimbish lay-up and a Kristal Robeson three-pointer. UIW answered with two jumpers.
After the early tie, the Pioneers went on a 15-2 run to take a commanding 24-11 lead. TWU made 12 of 14 free throws in the first half to cruise into intermission on top 38-24.
TWU maintained a double digit margin throughout the final 20 minutes of action. The Pioneers largest lead was 22 points with 4:34 remaining in the game.
Wimbish was six of seven from the field and 14 of 17 from the line. Robeson scored 11 points with nine assists. Courtney Colmer and Ashley Browning each added 12 points as well. Jennifer Schilb scored seven points with three rebounds in 15 minutes.
“Margaret is a great player. She carried us,” Hanebutt added. “Jennifer came in and played really well.”
The Pioneers and Cardinals played at UIW on Dec. 18. TWU won that game 71-67 and is now 12-4 all-time against UIW.
Next, the Pioneers travel to Cameron for a Lone Star Conference crossover game on Jan. 5 at 7:00 p.m.
