Rene Hanebutt recently completed her second season as the head basketball coach for the Texas Woman’s University Pioneers. Under Hanebutt's direction, TWU has emerged as a contending team in the highly competitive Lone Star Conference South Division. During the recently completed 2006-07 season, Hanebutt coached two TWU players to Lone Star Conference honors. Freshman guard Jessica Durr was chosen as the LSC South Division Freshman of the Year and senior post Margaret Wimbish was elected to the LSC South Division All-Conference second team.
Hanebutt came to TWU in April of 2005 after coaching stints at Tarleton State University and Decatur High School. She was an assistant basketball coach with the TexAnns from 2001-02 before leading Decatur to two district championships in three seasons. Hanebutt earned District 7-3A Coach of the Year accolades in 2003 and 2005. She was also the Denton Record-Chronicle Coach of the Year in 2003.
Hanebutt had a stellar playing career at Bowie ( Texas) High School and Texas Tech University. After leading Bowie High School to the 1995 3A State Championship as a senior and being named the Class 3A and USA Today Texas High School Player of the Year, she joined Marsha Sharp’s program at Texas Tech.
A four-year starter for the Lady Raiders, she is Tech’s all-time leader in three-pointers made with 282. She was part of a Lady Raiders team that won three conference championships including the Southwest Conference title in 1996 and the Big XII Conference regular season and tournament crowns in 1998 and 1999.
Hanebutt earned all-Big 12 second team honors as a senior and third-team recognition as a sophomore and junior. Additionally, she was named to the all-conference academic first team throughout her career.
Hanebutt was inducted into the Texas Basketball Hall of Fame in November of 2001. She also had her high school basketball jersey retired and is a member of the all-time Texas Tech Lady Raider team.
Hanebutt is excited about the direction the Pioneers’ program is headed in.
“There is no doubt in my mind that we have a good thing going here at TWU,” she explained. “In a very short period of time, we’ve been able to raise the bar recruiting-wise and really get high caliber players to come to TWU. Academically, TWU is outstanding, the facilities are excellent, and the administration is committed to building a winning basketball program. My goal is to make TWU one of the top team’s in all of NCAA Division II and I fully believe that we can do that.”
Hanebutt is the seventh head coach at TWU since the Pioneers moved to NCAA Division II in 1983-84. Before the 2005-2006 season, the Pioneers had not posted a winning record since 1989-90.
After graduating from college, Hanebutt worked for PNB Financial before starting her coaching career. She is active in various community activities including the United Way, American Cancer Society, Children’s Miracle Network, Make a Wish Foundation, Special Olympics and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
Hanebutt received bachelor’s degree in political science from Texas Tech in 1998. She also earned her master’s degree in sports administration from Tech in the fall of 2005.
