VOLLEYBALL SIGNS FOUR
DENTON,
Texas – Texas Woman’s University head
volleyball coach Shelly Barberee announced that Madlyn Craven,
Kathryn Rogge, Sharon Schaffner and Kandis Schroeder signed
National Letters of Intent for the 2004-05 season.
“We needed middles and defense and that is why we went after these four.
I am glad to get them all early,” said Barberee. “They all come from
winning programs that either went to regionals or the state tournament. They
are also strong academically with high class ranks and good test scores.”
Craven hails from White Oak, Texas, where she was a three-year letterwinner
for the Roughnecks. As a junior, Craven received all-district first team and
all-East Texas honorable mention honors. While leading her team to the area
championship her senior year, she was named the Most Valuable Hitter. Craven
finished her career with 1,149 aces, 289 blocks, 215 digs, 144 assists and
75 service aces. She played club volleyball for the East Texas Juniors and
Wrecking Crew. A member of the National Honor Society, she was named academic
all-district, Who’s Who Among American High School Students and to the
A Honor Roll.
“Madlyn played for a team that was ranked first in 3A all year before losing
in the regional quarterfinals and she led the East Texas area in kills,” added
Barberee. “She is a great all-around player with a 30-inch vertical jump.
She was a middle blocker but I look for her to be an outside hitter and play
defense at TWU.”
Rogge, who is from Glen Rose, Texas, lettered in volleyball, basketball and
track for the Tigers. Rogge was named the Newcomer of the Year (2001), all-district
first team (2002), all-district MVP (2003) and all-region (2004) squads. She
played club volleyball for the BCI and Club Med. In 2004, she was named an
Optimist Youth of the Month and received the Shattered Dreams Essay Scholarship.
Rogge
is a member of the National Honor Society as
well.
“I knew Kathryn when I was at Hill (College) from coaching her club team,” said
Barberee. “As a setter she was named district MVP and carried her team
to regionals. She led the team in kills and assists running a 6-2 offense. I
am bringing her in as a defensive player; she is very mobile and has a knack
for the game.”
Schaffner is from Henrietta, Texas, where she was a multi-sport athlete and
currently ranks first in her class. She lettered in volleyball, basketball,
tennis, track and softball as a Bearcat. As
a senior and captain, she led her team to victory in the area
and regional quarterfinals. She
was named to the all-district
and
all-state Texas Girls Coaches Association teams and was the MVP of district
5-2A. She played club volleyball for Wichita Falls Red River. Schaffner
was named academic all-district in all sports she competed
in as a prepster.
She is president of National Honor Society and has been
named to Who’s Who
Among American High School Students.
“Sharon is from a small school but was named MVP of her team and district.
She has played club volleyball with Kandis (Schroeder) last year,” added
Barberee. “Her overall attitude is great and I enjoyed getting to know
her family as well. She will play in the middle, outside and defensively
for the Pioneers next year.”
Schroeder joins TWU from Windthorst, Texas. She lettered in volleyball, basketball,
track and tennis for the Trojans. Schroeder was part of the regional all-tournament
team (2004), MVP of district 6-A (2003) and all-state first team (2003).
She played club volleyball for Wichita Falls Red River. She currently ranks
second
in her class and is a member of the National Honor Society.
“Kandis was MVP of her team that finished 42-0 this year. She was a leader
on the team in blocks and kills,” said Barberee. “She is one
of the top recruits in the area. Several Lone Star Conference schools were
recruiting
her and we are very excited she chose TWU. She has great mobility in the
middle and is a tall player with a great attitude. Windthorst has a great
program even
though they are a 1A school; they are successful year after year. She will
bring power to the middle blocker position for us.”
