FOUR PIONEERS NAMED TO ALL-CONFERENCE VOLLEYBALL
TEAM
DENTON,
Texas – The Lone Star Conference announced the
2004 North Division All-Conference volleyball awards and four
Texas Woman’s University student-athletes were honored.
Junior Carley Messmer led the way with first team honors and
senior Paz Diaz was named to the second team. Lindsey McCutcheon
and Courtney Jones earned honorable mention accolades.
“ I am proud of them. They deserved the honors they received,” said
head coach Shelly Barberee.
Messmer did a little bit of everything for the Pioneers from the setter position
this season. She played in 113 games for TWU registering 943 set assists overall
and 8.35 per game. The junior also put down 206 kills, had 25 aces, 34 blocks
and 327 digs. A well rounded player, she recorded six triple-doubles this year.
In 2003, Messmer earned all-conference honorable mention honors.
“ Carley had good stats this year and if we ran a 5-1 attack with her as
the primary setter I think she would have had a good shot at (conference) MVP
honors,” stated Barberee. “The team needed her attack though and
she did a great job and deserved to be on the first team.”
Diaz led the defensive efforts as the Pioneers libero in 2004. She led the
team in digs with 522 overall and 4.35 each game. Diaz also contributed 23
set assists and 13 aces. In 2003, Diaz earned all-conference honorable mention
honors.
“ Paz deserved second team honors and it was a close call between her and
Jenny Head of Cameron for Libero of the Year,” added Barberee.
McCutcheon missed the end of the season with an ankle injury after notching
nine double-digit kill matches for the Pioneers. She had 197 kills and averaged
over two kills a game. McCutcheon was solid at the net as well, leading the
team in total blocks with 77.
“ Lindsey led the team in blocks and kills and was also in the top six in
the conference before her injury,” said Barberee.
Jones led the team in kills and service aces. She had 280 kills including a
three-game stretch in which she had 20 or more. In addition, she registered
46 service aces. Jones added 522 digs and 31 blocks this season. In 2003, Jones
earned all-conference honorable mention honors.
“ Courtney really stepped up her game in the middle of the season with those
three consecutive 20 kill games. She was one of our best serve receivers as well,” said
Barberee.
