DIAZ AND MESSMER NAMED CONFERENCE PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

RICHARDSON, Texas – Texas Woman’s University volleyball players Paz Diaz and Carley Messmer were named the Lone Star Conference North Division Defensive and Setter of the Week, respectively, for the week of October 25-31.

Last week, the Pioneers (14-16, 5-3) won two of three matches including a pivotal four-game victory at Central Oklahoma. TWU defeated Dallas Baptist in five games and lost to Cameron in three.

“I think that after the week we had, Paz and Carley deserved it. Not only did those two play great but the whole team played well,” said head coach Shelly Barberee.

Diaz, a senior from Truth or Consequences, N.M., had a stellar week at the libero position. In the victory over the Bronchos, she registered a career-high 36 digs just missing the school record by three. She averaged 6.08 digs per game last week, adding 24 against DBU and 13 against Cameron.

“Paz has played well the whole season and is coming on strong,” added Barberee. “At the end of her senior year is a good time to do it. Hopefully we are peaking right now.”

Messmer, a junior from Garland, Texas, recorded a pair of triple-doubles, her fourth and fifth of the season. Against DBU, she had 11 kills, 38 assists and 14 digs while hitting at a .310 clip. In the win over UCO, she had 13 kills, 36 assists and 18 digs to pace the Pioneers. This is the second time this season (Oct. 18) and fourth time in her career Messmer has received Setter of the Week honors.

“Carley is a strong player. Five triple-doubles this season is awesome,” said Barberee. “You don’t get a setter who can excel in other areas very often, so when you have a player like that she needs to be honored.”

Next on the schedule is a conference match against Texas A&M-Commerce on Nov. 4 at 7:00 p.m. at home in Kitty Magee Arena.
