HAWKINS, MESSMER HONORED BY LONE STAR CONFERENCE
RICHARDSON,
Texas – Texas Woman’s University volleyball
players Robin Hawkins and Carley Messmer were named the Lone
Star Conference North Division Offensive and Setter of Week,
respectively, for the week of October 11-18.
Last
week, the Pioneers (11-13, 3-2) beat Southeastern Oklahoma
and Texas
A&M-Commerce
in conference action.
Hawkins,
a sophomore from Flower Mound, led the Pioneers offense averaging
3.71 kills per game while hitting .345.
Against SWOSU, she had 13 kills and
hit an outstanding .522. She had 13 kills against TAMUC as well. Hawkins
added five digs and total blocks during the week. This is the first Player
of the
Week honor for Hawkins in her career.
“I
pulled Robin aside last week because her statistics were
not where I thought they should be and set goals for her
during the week,” said head
coach Shelley Barberee, “She was one kill away from meeting all of
them but her hitting percentage was outstanding. Robin is a competitor
and as a sophomore,
a leader of the team and a big motivator.”
Messmer,
a junior from Garland, had a stellar week also recording
a triple-double against TAMUC
with 12 kills, 27 assists and 13 digs. In the match-up
with SWOSU, Messmer recorded five kills, 28 assists and eight digs. For
the week,
she averaged
7.86 assists and 3.0 digs per game. This is the third time Messmer
has received Setter of the Week honors as a Pioneer.
“Carley’s
strong suit is hitting, which as a team we need her on the
attack. We have been running a 6-2 offense with Nikki (Hester)
as the other
setter to showcase her ability,” added Barberee.
The
Pioneers host Midwestern State tonight and Tarleton State,
Oct. 20, both matches
begin at 7:00 p.m.
