PIONEERS END SEASON WITH LOSS
AUSTIN , Texas – The Texas Woman’s University soccer team scored first but it was not enough as St. Edward’s defeated the Pioneers, 2-1, in its season finale.
TWU wasted no time scoring at the 5:30 mark off a corner kick. Christine Hornisher headed the ball into the net for her third goal of the season. Natalie Grant recorded the assist, her second of the year, sending the ball into the box.
The Hilltoppers scored before halftime to tie the game, 1-1.
The score remained tied until the 69th minute, when Priscila Cano scored her second goal of the game to put St. Edward’s ahead, 2-1.
“We were the better team and played well. It’s sad to dominate the game and still lose,” said head coach Fleur Benatar.
Pioneer goalkeeper Krista Elbert notched another solid game with seven saves.
TWU took 15 shots including seven on goal but couldn’t find the back of the net. Emily Meinen and Breann Morris each took four shots.
“We had three great scoring opportunities but we hit the post, missed high and were wide on those,” added Benatar.
The Pioneers conclude the 2004 season 5-13-1 overall and 2-6-1 in Lone Star Conference play. Sue Cribbes and Meinen led the team with four goals. Cribbes added two assists for a team-high 10 points this year.
