PIONEERS FALL TO LIONS
DENTON , Texas – The Texas Woman’s University soccer team was defeated by Texas A&M-Commerce, 3-0, in their final home game of 2004 in front of 166 fans.
The Pioneers ( 5-12-1 , 2-6-1 ) had a tough end to their Lone Star Conference schedule hosting the top two teams in the league back-to-back. The second-place Lions came in and played their game, which is a very direct style as they launch the ball everywhere.
“That is their game and it really disrupts the possession style game we like to play,” said head coach Fleur Benater. “They just send every ball long and it is very frustrating to try and adjust to that.”
A&M-Commerce wasted no time getting on the board scoring at the 8:17 mark with a shot from in the box off a cross. The Pioneer defense clamped down after that allowing just five shots the rest of the half.
TWU had six shots in the first half but couldn’t find the back of the net.
The Lions added to their lead in the second half scoring two goals within seven minutes to put the game out of reach. At the 63:03 mark, a free kick from 40 yards out found the back of the net evading Pioneer goalie Krista Elbert. A&M-Commerce scored their third goal after Elbert dropped the ball and the Lions punched it in.
Mandy Lambert took three of the Pioneers eight shots in the game. Elbert faced 16 shots including eight on goal and recorded five saves.
“It is disappointing to lose to a good team, I didn’t want to end the season at home like that,” said Benatar. “Erica ( Butler ), Romy (Luna), Mandy and Emily (Meinen) all contributed well tonight.”
Next, the Pioneers close out the regular season on the road at St. Edward’s, Oct. 31, beginning at 12:00 p.m.
“Now we look forward to our last game and try to win that,” added Benatar.
