MEINEN SCORES QUICKLY, PIONEERS WIN
DENTON, Texas – Emily Meinen scored less than a minute into the game as the Texas Woman’s University soccer team defeated Southwestern Oklahoma State University, 1-0, in Lone Star Conference action.
Meinen shot and scored her third goal of the season from 30 yards out just 48 seconds after the game started to give the Pioneers (5-10-1, 2-4-1) the early lead and break the school record for the quickest goal to begin a game previously held by Lacey Steinkamp (2:22).
“That was crazy and totally unexpected,” said Meinen, “I didn’t even know I was going to shoot until Melissa (Scott) told me to shoot.”
After that the name of the game was defense as both teams battled it out in midfield. SWOSU out shot TWU, 14-9, but Krista Elbert made four saves to keep the ball out of the net. In the second half it looked like the Bulldogs were going to tie the game on a breakaway shot but the ball bounced off the pole and went out of bounds.
“That was a little too close for comfort when we only had one goal and should have had six,” said head coach Fleur Benatar, “Julie (Hosek) did well in the back and Mandy (Lambert) contributed as a sub.”
TWU held a slight edge in corner kicks, 4-3, and accumulated eight fouls compared to just three for SWOSU.
“We played hard and worked together,” added junior Erica Butler, “Now we just need to finish more balls.”
The Pioneers are now 2-0-1 all-time against the Bulldogs.
Next, the Pioneers host Central Oklahoma , Oct. 24, at the Mean Green Soccer Complex beginning at 5:00 p.m.
