PIONEERS AND LADY REDS TIE IN DOUBLE OVERTIME
TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The Texas Woman’s University soccer team played for 110 minutes before the game ended in a 1-1 tie with Northeastern State.
“We had so many opportunities to score, but they were saved or hit the crossbar,” said head coach Fleur Benatar.
Northeastern State scored first with a chip shot from about 25 yards away that was just out of Krista Elbert’s reach.
Freshman Romy Luna scored for TWU, her first goal of the season, to send the game into overtime eventually.
In the first and second overtime, ten-minute periods, neither team could find the back of the net while trying to get the golden goal.
“We played great and are getting closer to putting the ball in the net,” added Benatar, “I would have liked to win but am glad not to lose.”
The Pioneers ( 4-9-1 , 1-3-1 ) dominated the Lady Reds in the box score with 21 shots including seven on goal compared to seven for the home team. Emily Meinen paced TWU with six shots.
Elbert had three saves in the game.
“It was windy today but everybody worked hard and Erica Butler really stood out on defense,” said Benatar.
Next, the Pioneers play East Central, Oct. 17, beginning at 2:00 p.m.
