TWU WINS BATTLE WITH ASU, 2-1

DENTON, Texas – The Texas Woman’s University soccer team picked up it’s first Lone Star Conference victory with a hard fought win over Angelo State, 2-1.

The Pioneers (4-9, 1-3) were forced to get physical against the Rambelles ( 6-6-1 , 1-2-1 ) on a wet field before 124 fans at the Mean Green Soccer Complex.

“This is a huge win and definitely was a battle,” said head coach Fleur Benatar, “The team played great the whole game and came to win today.”

At the 28:00 mark, Sue Cribbes took a corner kick which was redirected into the net by ASU, for an own goal, to put TWU ahead. That would be all of the scoring in the first half but fouls were plentiful as ASU registered 12 and TWU six in the first 45 minutes of action.

In the second half, Melissa Scott added to the Pioneers lead scoring on a breakaway goal at the 68:40 mark.

“Melissa played exceptional,” added Benatar, “We finally finished on our shots to score some good goals.”

The Rambelles had two scoring opportunities go awry, one when the ball stopped in the water right in front of the goal and a shot off the crossbar, before finding the back of the net in the 78 th minute. The Rambelles scored off a header from a corner kick to get within a goal.

Krista Elbert had seven saves as the Pioneers were solid on defense. Breann Morris paced the offense with three shots as Cribbes and Hornisher added two apiece.

The Rambelles finished the game with 16 fouls including two yellow cards in the second half.

The Pioneers beat Angelo State for the first time in the history of the three-year-old program.

“This is a great spirit-lifter for the team, we played well, then won,” said Benatar.

Next, TWU is back on the road for conference action, Oct. 14, at Northeastern State beginning at 1:00 p.m.
