SOCCER FALLS TO MIDWESTERN STATE
DENTON, Texas – The Texas Woman’s University soccer team ended up on the losing side in a back-and-forth Lone Star Conference match-up with Midwestern State, 1-0.
“We are doing what we can and playing good soccer but just not scoring,” said head coach Fleur Benatar, “This was a good measuring stick for our team.”
In the first half, the Lady Indians ( 7-3-2 , 2-2) took six shots and the Pioneers (3-9, 0-3) took four but neither team found the back of the net.
MSU capitalized on a free kick in the second half as Angela Darrough scored on a header assisted by Sarah Wyles at the 55:20 mark.
TWU took four shots in the second half as well but could not get the ball past MSU goalie Elli O’Dwyer. The Pioneers started the half with two shots by Romy Luna within the first six minutes but the first was saved and the second wide. Melissa Scott took another shot at the 59:57 mark but it was saved. Emily Meinen took the last shot of the game for TWU at the 62:54 mark which went wide.
Freshman goalkeeper Krista Elbert had five saves for the Pioneers.
“Erica Butler, Amanda Odino and Elbert played well,” added Benatar, “The defense was solid for 90 minutes so now we need the forwards to do something.”
TWU drops to 0-3 all-time against MSU.
“We are narrowing the gap with MSU after getting outscored big in previous years,” said Benatar.
Next, TWU host Angelo State in conference action, Oct. 10, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
