THREE FORMER PIONEERS EARN DIVISION II DEGREE-COMPLETION AWARD
DENTON , Texas – Former Pioneers Jennifer Bolli, Erin MacNabb and Melanie Pabalate have been awarded a NCAA Division II Degree-Completion Award for the 2005-06 academic year.
The NCAA established the Division II Degree-Completion Award Program in 2001. Thirty-two recipients were awarded for 2001-02 and 33 were awarded for 2002-03. The graduation rate was 95 percent for the 2001 award period. The 2004-05 NCAA Division II Degree-Completion Award Committee reviewed approximately 139 applications and awarded 98 applicants from 48 institutions.
Bolli is completing her degree in kinesiology at Texas Woman’s University. As a Pioneer gymnast, she was part of the 2003 USA Gymnastics National Championship. In 2005, Bolli received USAG Scholar Athlete, Midwest Independent scholastic all-conference and scholar athlete by the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women honors.
MacNabb is finishing her degree in kinesiology at TWU. She earned several athletic and academic awards as a Pioneer gymnast. MacNabb currently holds the school record on the uneven bars (9.925). She set the mark multiple times including during the team competition as TWU won the USAG title in 2003. She was named to the 2005 ESPN The Magazine CoSIDA Academic All-District VI College Division Women’s At-Large Team which honors success on the field of play and in the classroom. MacNabb was also a four-time scholar athlete by the NACGC.
Pabalate played volleyball for TWU and is working towards her degree in kinesiology. She received the 2004-05 TWU President’s Award which recognizes outstanding excellence in their sport, in the classroom and in the promotion of TWU Athletics. As a senior, she was the Denton Record-Chronicle Player of the Week twice and named to the Lone Star Conference Commissioner’s Honor Roll.
The purpose of the Division II Degree-Completion Award program is to provide financial assistance to deserving student-athletes with completion of a first baccalaureate degree. Candidates will be students who have exhausted their athletics eligibility and have received athletics financial aid.
The selection process for the national award emphasizes the academic performance of the student-athlete. Other factors considered are financial circumstances, athletic achievement and involvement in campus and community activities.
In the LSC, eight of the 15 schools had award winners but only TWU and West Texas A&M had all three applicants selected.
