FOUR
PIONEERS RECEIVE CONFERENCE ACADEMIC AWARDS
DENTON,
Texas – Texas Woman’s University volleyball
player Melanie Pabalate and student athletic trainers Debra
Motch, Tiffany Smith and Lesley Stranger were honored by the
Lone Star Conference as the league announced its annual academic
awards for 2004-05.
Each academic year, the LSC presents a Scholar-Athlete Award to one male and
one female student-athlete at each member institution. These student-athletes
are selected as representatives of the outstanding accomplishments in athletics,
scholarship and leadership that are displayed on each LSC campus during the
year.
To be eligible for consideration, student-athletes must have participated at
least two years in their sport and must have exhausted their athletics eligibility.
Pabalate received the 2004-05 President’s Award, the highest accolade
given to a current TWU student-athlete. The award honors a student-athlete’s
outstanding excellence in her sport, in the classroom and in the promotion
of the athletics department. As a senior, Pabalate registered 13 double-digit
kill matches. She was second on the team in kills and blocks last season as
well. The kinesiology major received the Kitty Magee Award for dedication in
2004 and has earned numerous academic honors. Pabalate served as secretary
of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and collaborated on two community
service projects. SAAC collected cans for the Denton Chapter of the American
Red Cross and held an “Afternoon with Santa” Christmas party in
which toys were distributed to needy children who live on campus and whose
mothers attend TWU.
Motch, Smith and Stranger were recognized as Athletic Training Student Academic
Award winners. The LSC recognizes student athletic trainers who devote countless
hours to assist with the operation of the athletics department while also finding
the time to excel in the classroom each academic year. To be eligible for LSC
academic honors, student athletic trainers must carry at least a 3.20 grade
point average with a minimum of 24 semester hours at the nominating institution.
The qualifications mirror those required of student-athletes to gain LSC All-Academic
recognition. |
