DENTON,
Texas – Texas Woman’s University Intercollegiate
Athletics recognized its five sports on April 30 with their
annual awards banquet. Teams and individuals were honored for
their athletic and academic accomplishments in basketball,
gymnastics, soccer, softball, volleyball and athletic training.
“Our annual awards banquet is a special event that acknowledges the achievements
of our student-athletes, coaches and staff,” Director of Athletics Chalese
Connors said. “We have accomplished so much in the past year and I’m
glad so many family and friends were here today to share it with us. The Pioneers
are also especially grateful to those individuals and businesses that support
our program.”
TWU Chancellor and President Dr. Ann Stuart was in attendance to present the
2004-05 President’s Award. Senior volleyball player Melanie Pabalate
won the award which recognizes outstanding excellence in their sport, in the
classroom and in the promotion of TWU Athletics. Pabalate registered 13 double-digit
kill matches last season. She was second on the team in kills and blocks as
well. The kinesiology major received the Kitty Magee Award in 2004 and has
earned numerous academic honors. Pabalate served as secretary of the Student-Athlete
Advisory Committee (SAAC) and collaborated on two community service projects.
SAAC collected cans for the Denton Chapter of the American Red Cross and held
an “Afternoon with Santa” Christmas party in which toys were distributed
to needy children who live on campus and whose mothers attend TWU.
