PUTTING FORE PIONEERS BRINGS IN SCHOLARSHIP DOLLARS

DENTON, Texas –The Putting Fore Pioneers Tournament, a new fundraising event targeted at the TWU campus community, has been deemed a success, raising $841.00 for athletics scholarships.

“This tournament is something new and different and we want to make it an annual event,” Director of Athletics Chalese Connors said. “Word has gotten around campus now about how much fun playing in this tournament was; we’ve got people teaming up with partners for next year already.”

Putting Fore Pioneers included a nine-hole miniature golf competition in two divisions. In the student division, Brian Griffin was the individual champion with a score of 20 and Ashley Fennell and John Luburich won the team title with a combined score of 46. The TWU volleyball coaching staff swept the faculty/staff division. Head coach Shelly Barberee and assistant Houston Harris tied for individual honors by each shooting a 19 and played together to claim the team trophy with a score of 38.

A raffle was also held in conjunction with the golf tournament. More than 40 prizes were donated including the grand prize, a 27” flat-screen television/DVD/VCR combo. Cathy Banks, a member of the TWU Athletics Council and director of the TWU Science and Mathematics Center for Women, won the television.

“The students really responded to the raffle,” Connors added. “Who wouldn’t? There were some great prizes. TWU Athletics is very grateful to Kyle Voyles, David Sweeten and other staff members in the Student Center Office who organized and oversaw the entire event.”
