PIONEERS JOIN HURRICANE RELIEF EFFORTS
DENTON , Texas – The Texas Woman’s University Athletics department is joining the relief effort for victims of Hurricane Katrina.
“This disaster is unbelievable and beyond comprehension,” Director of Athletics Chalese Connors said. “We asked ourselves, ‘How can we help?’ I have talked with friends in Louisiana who are involved in helping the evacuees and they all say that the greatest need is money. TWU Athletics has organized two events to help.”
On Wednesday, September 7, Pioneer staff and student-athletes will be in the heart of campus on Administration Drive and Bell Avenue with American Red Cross cans to accept donations. The Pioneers will be collecting from 7 – 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 – 6 p.m.
“So many people want to make sure their donation goes to the right place. We want our students, faculty, staff, fans and the Denton community to know that the donations will go directly to the American Red Cross,” Connors added.
Also all proceeds from the Pioneers’ 4:30 p.m. volleyball match on Sept. 10 against Ouachita Baptist will go to the American Red Cross Hurricane 2005 Relief. Proceeds from ticket sales, concessions and “GO TWU PIONEERS” spirit wristbands sales will be contributed.
The student-athletes and fans will receive red, white and blue ribbons to wear in support as well.
American Red Cross volunteers have been deployed to the hardest hit areas of Katrina’s destruction, supplying hundreds of thousands victims left homeless with critical necessities. By making a financial gift to Hurricane 2005 Relief, the Red Cross can provide shelter, food, counseling and other assistance to those in need .
