PIONEERS FIND INTENSITY FOR VICTORY
AUSTIN , Texas – The Texas Woman’s University basketball team overcame a 12-point halftime deficit to defeat St. Edward’s University, 82-72, in non-conference action.
“The story of the game was intensity. We didn’t have it in the first half and did in the second,” said head coach Devin Gabbard. “In the first half, we couldn’t guard number 33 (Sara Baca) but Kelley (Humphries) shut her down in the second half.”
The Pioneers (7-3, 1-0) outscored the Hilltoppers, 57-35, in the second half. Baca finished the game with 23 points and 10 rebounds but had only four points and three rebounds after halftime.
“Kelley was great at both ends of the court. We put her on Baca, even though she gives up some size, and she led the defensive effort,” said Gabbard. “Adriana (Martin) played really hard and had a great game as well.”
TWU stepped up the defense with full-court pressure to force 34 Hilltopper turnovers. With 6:35 left in the game the Pioneers took the lead for good on a jumper by Martin.
Matalya McBath had a game-high 26 points along with six rebounds, six steals and four assists. Martin had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Humphries added 10 points and six rebounds.
“Matalya had a great game. She encountered foul trouble early in the game limiting her minutes,” added Gabbard. “She sparks the team and took over in the second half.”
The Pioneers begin the New Year at Texas A&M-Kingsville on Jan. 1 at 2:00 p.m. This is the second meeting of the season between TWU and TAMUK. The Pioneers won round one, 82-75.
