McBATH LEADS PIONEERS TO VICTORY WITH TRIPLE-DOUBLE
DENTON, Texas – Matalya McBath had a triple-double to propel Texas Woman’s University over Texas A&M-Kingsville, 82-75, in Lone Star Conference action.
The Pioneers (6-3, 1-0) are off to their best start since the 1995-96 season. The Javelinas fall to 3-7, 0-1 to begin LSC play.
McBath finished the game with a season-high 33 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. Teneisha McKinney also had a solid game with 18 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double.
“Matalya had the best performance out of a player here in a long time. She was just unbelievable,” said head coach Devin Gabbard. “Teneisha played really well. She is starting to find her rhythm and shooting the ball better. It makes a big difference when she looks to score instead of going with the flow of the game.”
The Pioneers went on an 8-0 run to begin the game before the Javelinas scored at the 15:48 mark. McBath had 10 points, six rebounds and seven assists in the first half. TWU led 38-24 after the first 20 minutes of action.
TAMUK came out after halftime and went on a 10-2 run to get within six points. The Javelinas kept chipping away at the deficit, tying the game at 72 with 2:13 left. TAMUK took the lead, 74-73, for the first time in the game on a layup by Dely’la Hoodye. McBath answered with a lay-up and three-pointer to put the game out of reach.
“Our defensive intensity was very different from the first to second half. The team needs to learn how to put teams away that you should,” added Gabbard. “We got through it but maybe it scared them a little bit. It was a great performance by the team.”
Ashley Browning joined McBath and McKinney in double figures with 13 points. Mandy Darwin and Adriana Martin each had five rebounds.
TWU returns to action after the holidays at St. Edward’s on Dec. 30 in non-conference action beginning at 5:30 p.m.
