McBATH HITS GAME-WINNER

LAWTON, Okla. – The Texas Woman’s University basketball team beat Cameron University, 59-56, as Matalya McBath hit the game-winning three-pointer with six seconds left in the game.

The Pioneers (5-2) and Aggies (1-6) were tied at 56-56 as McBath brought the ball up the court after a Cameron missed free throw. Left unguarded she calmly drained a three-pointer. On the ensuing inbounds pass, Megan McCrummen stole the ball and put up a shot that went out of bounds giving the Aggies another shot to tie the game but time expired.

“They called a timeout so we set up a play to run against a man-to-man defense but they stayed in a zone. We instructed them to run the offense and I told Matalya not to leave any time on the clock when she took the shot,” said head coach Devin Gabbard. “Then they threw the ball to Megan and we held on for the win.”

TWU started the game with a 4-0 run but had the lead only two other times after that. In a sloppy game the teams combined for 57 total turnovers and 48 total fouls. Cameron took 37 free throws compared to just 15 for TWU. The Pioneers trailed the entire second half by as much as 13 before McBath made the basket to put the Pioneers on top.

“I am very happy with the win. A game like this builds character. They went on a run with eight minutes left and backed us into a corner but we come out fighting,” added Gabbard. “We executed well at the end and got a good team win.”

McBath paced the Pioneers with 19 points, 8 rebounds, five assists and six steals for another solid all-around game. Ashley Browning added a double-double with 12 points and 10 boards. Mandy Darwin had 10 points and eight rebounds. Adriana Martin contributed eight rebounds as TWU out rebounded Cameron, 50-40.

The Pioneers return to action Dec. 11 at Southwestern Oklahoma State . The game begins at 2:00 p.m.
