McBATH BREAKS STEAL RECORD IN PIONEERS VICTORY
DENTON, Texas – Sophomore Matalya McBath had a school record nine steals as the Pioneers turned up the heat on defense and beat Southeastern Oklahoma State, 65-53, in Lone Star Conference crossover action.
The Texas Woman’s University (4-2) defense held the Lady Savages to 35.7 percent from the field and forced 25 turnovers.
“Defense was a big key. To hold them to 35 percent from the field is a lot of work for us. We did a great job of getting in the passing lanes and frustrating shooters,” said head coach Devin Gabbard. “Southeastern is a good team even though their record doesn’t show it. They have played high quality opponents. It is a good win for us.”
McBath added a game-high 19 points and three assists. She broke the steals record of seven set by Nikki Ulery in 1995.
“Matalya played well. She is finally starting to understand where her scoring opportunities and high percentage shots are. She is knocking down her free throws as well,” said Gabbard. “Defensively she adds so much and just wears people out. The intensity she brings for 40 minutes is unbelievable.”
Adriana Martin led the rebounding efforts
with 12 as the Pioneers out rebounded the Lady Savages, 37-32.
“Adrianna is a great rebounder. She is one of those players that knows where the ball is and works hard to get it,” added Gabbard.
Kelley Humphries and Mandy Darwin each added 10 points. Humphries made four-of-five shots from the field and both her free throws to go with five boards in the game.
“Kelley had a great game and shot the ball well. We knew that somebody had to step up with Ashley (Browning) gone. This was a team win,” said Gabbard.
Browning missed the game due to a death in the family. The Pioneers picked up their second win in 13 games against the Lady Savages all-time. TWU continues LSC crossover play Dec. 9 at Cameron beginning at 7:00 p.m.
