PIONEERS BEAT TIGERS
DENTON, Texas – The Texas Woman’s University basketball team utilized a tenacious defense and balanced scoring to beat East Central, 57-45, in non-conference action at Kitty Magee Arena in front of 131 fans.
The Pioneers (3-2) defense had 21 steals and
forced 41 Tiger turnovers. Matalya McBath and Adriana Martin
each had six steals. TWU had four players score in double-digits,
led by McBath with 16 points.
“Defensively we weren’t
getting in the passing lanes and applying pressure like we
could so we really focused on that in practice,” said
head coach Devin Gabbard. “Coach Trammell works with
the defense day in and day out. All credit goes to her. The
defense was tremendous tonight.”
TWU didn’t let the Tiger offense get comfortable by switching defenses and applying various presses throughout the contest. The ECU miscues led to 34 points for the Pioneers.
“East Central is a team that is
really struggling right now. We thought that if we gave them
different looks they would have a hard time getting into
a rhythm. I think it paid off. 41 turnovers is a lot of mistakes,” added
Gabbard.
The Pioneers took the lead for good at the 14:05 mark in the first half and didn’t look back. This is the first time in six meetings that TWU has defeated ECU.
Ashley Browning scored all of her 15 points in the first half and led the team with seven rebounds. Martin and Teneisha McKinney added 11 and 10, respectively.
“Ashley was a big key to keeping us ahead in the first half. Her maturity kept us in the game. We had foul trouble leaving her as the only scorer on the court but she filled the role like you expect an upperclassman to,” said Gabbard.
The Pioneers are back at Kitty Magee Arena,
Dec. 4, against Southeastern Oklahoma State. Tip-off is set
for 3:00 p.m.
