OFFENSE FALLS SHORT IN DEFEAT

DENTON, Texas – The Texas Woman’s University basketball team struggled against the zone defense of St. Edward’s falling to the Hilltoppers, 54-57, in non-conference action at Kitty Magee Arena.

Facing a steady dose of zone the Pioneers (2-2) shot 14.3 percent from behind the three-point line making three-of-21 attempts in the contest.

“We came out very timid which cost us. They played zone most of the game and we struggled shooting and didn’t go to the boards. A lot of effort things we have done, we didn’t do tonight,” said head coach Devin Gabbard. “We couldn’t buy a three-point basket. If you would have told me a month ago that someone plays a zone and we lose I would have bet that didn’t happen. We have shooters, Ashley (Browning); Megan (McCrummen) and Adriana (Martin) are too good (of shooters).”

Most of the action happened in the final minute of the game. With 57 seconds remaining Sara Baca hit a three for St. Edward’s tying the contest. Matalya McBath missed a three then committed a foul sending Tina Ybarra to the line. Ybarra hit both to put the Hilltoppers ahead by two points. Next, Martin hit one of two free throws after being fouled by Baca. A crazy sequence of turnovers, steals and offensive fouls occurred before Ybarra went to the line with four seconds left. She made both free throws putting St. Edward’s ahead by three points. In an attempt to tie the game, McBath came up just short on a three-pointer as time expired.

McBath and Kelley Humphries were the only two Pioneers in double-digits with 15 and 13 points, respectively. Browning paced TWU with eight rebounds. Martin led the team with five steals.

“Our big emphasis tonight was to win the boards by 10. We got out rebounded by three and let them in the game,” added Gabbard. “It was one of those nights where you have to do other little things to win and we didn’t do them.”

Next, TWU hosts East Central Dec. 2 tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. at Kitty Magee Arena.
