PIONEERS FALL TO TEXANNS

DENTON , Texas – The Texas Woman’s University basketball team fell to Tarleton State, 63-71, for its first loss of the 2004-05 season in the home opener at Kitty Magee Arena.

The Pioneers (2-1) shot 39.7 percent from the field, making just 23 of 58 field goals, and had 25 turnovers. TWU is now 7-13 all-time against the Texanns.

“I give credit to Tarleton State they came in on a mission and wanted to get back on the right track. We were complacent and paid the price for that tonight,” said head coach Devin Gabbard.

Junior Ashley Browning and freshman Jennifer Schilb paced TWU with 18 points each. Browning showed her touch from three-point land hitting 4 of 8 from behind the arc. Adriana Martin added 13 points and a team-high nine rebounds.

“Ashley played great; I give her a lot of props. She hit big shots in key times from the inside and outside,” added Gabbard. “Jennifer was in the right place at the right time all night. Offensively you don’t expect a freshman post player to put up the numbers she has in the Lone Star Conference. She is doing a great job. Adriana has been a monster on the boards; it is hard to keep her off the court.”

It was a close contest throughout as the score changed hands seven times and was tied five. TWU led 30-25 at halftime.

Browning started the second period with a three to put the Pioneers on top by eight points. The Texanns fought back taking the lead with 9:29 left in the game on an Isha Brown free throw. Browning hit another big three to put the Pioneers up by two, 53-51, but it was all TSU after that.

“What hurt the most tonight was giving up offensive rebounds (to TSU) at key times, we just can’t do that,” said Gabbard. “Also we teach that fouls are errors and tonight we fouled at the wrong times.”

The Pioneers get a break from competition over the Thanksgiving holiday before returning to action Nov. 30 against St. Edward’s, tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. at Kitty Magee Arena.
