PIONEERS DEFEAT HARDING
WICHITA FALLS , Texas – The Texas Woman’s University basketball team is 2-0 for the first time under head coach Devin Gabbard after defeating Harding, 72-49, at the Midwestern State Tournament.
“I was worried that we would be complacent after winning yesterday but we came out in the second half and put them away,” said Gabbard.
The Pioneers led by just four points at halftime but out rebounded the Lady Bisons, 55-35, and made 34 of 42 free throws to pull away in the second half.
“Tonight our emphasis was to win the boards by 15 because they are deep in the post,” said Gabbard. “At halftime we made some adjustments and were able to hold them to six assists in the game which is outstanding.”
Adriana Martin had a double-double with a game-high 21 points and 13 rebounds to lead TWU. Matalya McBath, Ashley Browning and Valery Redfearn joined Martin in double digits.
“Adriana had a great game. I went back and watched yesterday’s game and realized that she had 11 points in the first half but only played four or five minutes in the second half,” said Gabbard. “She really picked us up today.”
McBath had a solid all-around game with 13 points, seven rebounds, five assists and six steals. Browning and Redfearn added 13 and 11 points, respectively.
“Matalya is so unbelievably quick,” stated Gabbard. “She creates offense with her defense and is able to get to the basket and either get fouled or finish.”
The Pioneers return to action, Nov. 23, hosting Tarleton State at Kitty Magee Arena beginning at 7:00 p.m.
“Now we have some momentum heading into our home opener against a pretty good Tarleton State team,” added Gabbard.
