McKINNEY NAILS THREE, PIONEERS WIN
WICHITA FALLS , Texas – Teneisha McKinney made a three-pointer with three seconds left to lift Texas Woman’s University to a 78-76 victory over Central Missouri in their first game of the 2004-05 season.
After the Jennies hit a jumper with 11 seconds remaining to go up by one point, Ashley Browning found McKinney at the top of the key for the game-winner.
“It was awesome. We went down and ran our offense and they doubled Ashley leaving Teneisha open,” said head coach Devin Gabbard. “I have been after her to shoot more three’s in practice and Teneisha said she wasn’t a three-point shooter. That was a pretty good shot for not being a three-point shooter.”
In the first half, TWU (1-0) built an eight-point lead early but only led by two after the first 20 minutes of action. The score was tied six times and the lead changed hands 11 times in a game that was decided in the closing seconds.
Matalya McBath had a game-high 22 points with two assists and four steals before fouling out with 1:53 left in the game. Browning added 20 points and four rebounds.
Adriana Martin and McKinney also scored in double-digits with 13 and 10 points, respectively. McKinney added six steals and five rebounds as well.
The Pioneers hit 45 percent of their shots from the field including 7 of 17 from behind the three-point line.
Kelley Humphries paced TWU with nine rebounds as they out rebounded the Jennies, 38-31, including 18 offensive boards.
“We had players step up at the right time all night. Kelley had big boards, Adriana hit a big bucket to put us ahead and Matalya had her way until fouling out,” added Gabbard.
Next, TWU faces Harding, Nov. 20, at 4:00 p.m. in their second game at the Midwestern State Tournament in Wichita Falls , Texas .
