PIONEERS FALL IN EXHIBITION GAME

DENTON , Texas – The Texas Woman’s University basketball team fell to the Oklahoma Flyers, 70-87, in an exhibition contest at Kitty Magee Arena.

“I am kind of pleased with our effort today,” said head coach Devin Gabbard. “We didn’t play defense consistently and need to work on our shot selection.”

The Pioneers jumped out to a 5-0 lead to begin the game. Down 11-5, the Flyers utilized three Pioneer turnovers to take the lead for good at the 13:55 mark with a Maria Villarroel lay-up.

The Flyers shot 59.3 percent from the field in the first half to lead by 10 points, 41-31, at halftime.

“We never got into a rhythm on offense and struggled throughout the game,” said Gabbard.

Villarroel, who played at the University of Oklahoma , led the Flyers with a game-high 27 points.

TWU had four players in double-digits led by freshman Jennifer Schilb with 14 points. Junior Ashley Browning added 11 points and six rebounds. Matalya McBath and Adrianna Martin each contributed 10 points as well.

The Pioneers held the rebounding advantage 43-34. Kelley Humphries led the effort with 11 rebounds.

“We did a great job on the boards despite being the smaller team. That will pay big dividends when we are going against teams our own size,” added Gabbard.

Both teams struggled with turnovers in the contest. The Pioneers miscues led to 33 points for the Flyers.

“The bottom line is we can’t have 33 turnovers and win any game,” stated Gabbard.

The Pioneers scheduled the match-up with the Flyers, a group of former Division I basketball players from Oklahoma and Texas , as a tune-up for the 2004-05 season.

“We could have scheduled somebody easier to play but wouldn’t have learned as much. Playing against their size and elite players from the University of Oklahoma will pay off in the long run,” said Gabbard.

TWU opens the regular season at the Midwestern State Tournament, Nov. 19, against Central Missouri at 4:00 p.m.
