TWU BASKETBALL COACH DEVIN GABBARD RESIGNS
DENTON,
Texas – Texas Woman’s University head
basketball coach Devin Gabbard has announced his resignation,
effective March 1st.
TWU concluded its 2004-05 season this evening at West Texas
A&M. The Pioneers
went 10-16 overall and 3-11 in the Lone Star Conference.
“I enjoyed my time here and met some great friends and players,” Gabbard
said. “I appreciate the University giving me the opportunity.”
Gabbard was at TWU for eight years including five seasons as the head coach.
In 2002-03, the Pioneers had their best season under Gabbard finishing fourth
in the LSC South Division with an 11-16 overall and 7-7 conference mark to
make their first appearance in the LSC tournament since the 1995-96 season.
He leaves with an overall record of 36-96.
“Devin has been a part of TWU Athletics for a long time and he will always
be a member of the Pioneer family,” Director of Athletics Chalese Connors
said. “He is a talented recruiter and has a great knowledge of the game.
We appreciate what he has done for our basketball program and wish him the best.”
Gabbard started his coaching career as a student assistant at TWU in 1994 until
his graduation in 1996. He then assisted the Athletics Director from 1996-98
as a graduate assistant in home event management while continuing to assist
with the basketball team. He left Denton in 1998 to be the assistant women’s
basketball coach at Texas A&M-Kingsville before being named the Pioneers’ head
coach on June 1, 2000.
“I think that with the returning players this is an experienced team. It
will be good to get in new blood and coaching philosophies,” Gabbard added. “I
intend to pursue other coaching opportunities.”
Connors said that a national search for Gabbard’s replacement would begin
immediately and an interim coach would not be named.
