PIONEERS PLAY HARD IN DEFEAT AT WEST TEXAS A&M

CANYON, Texas – The Texas Woman’s University basketball team put up a fight before falling to West Texas A&M in Lone Star Conference action, 63-97.

The Pioneers (10-16, 3-11) concluded the 2004-05 season with the contest against the Lady Buffs (20-7, 11-3).

“We came out in the first half impatient and took early shots. Their defensive pressure forces you into bad shots as well,” said head coach Devin Gabbard. “The first half hurt us because we didn’t execute.”

TWU found itself in a hole early and trailed the Lady Buffs by 18 at halftime. They made 12 field goals compared to 16 for the home team.

The Pioneers shot the ball well in the second half (56.5 percent) but it was not enough to mount a comeback. Turnovers really hurt TWU as the 30 they committed turned into 40 points for WTAMU.

Adriana Martin tied her season high with 21 points to lead TWU. Kelly Humphries added 10 points. Martin also led the Pioneers with five rebounds.

“Adriana played her guts out. Her and Kelley really played with a lot of heart and effort,” Gabbard added. “I am real proud that the team fought hard and stayed competitive throughout the game. With all that was on the line and the year we had they really pulled together.”

With no seniors on the team, the Pioneers will return an experienced squad for next season.
