ENMU EDGES TWU BY THREE
PORTALES , N.M. – The Texas Woman’s University basketball team fell to Eastern New Mexico by just three points, 54-57, despite making just six baskets in the first half.
The Pioneers (10-15, 3-10) were able to keep the game close with a strong defensive effort.
“It was a really awkward night from the field. We were impatient on offense which is not what you want to be against ENMU,” head coach Devin Gabbard said. “They are physical so we wanted to extend the possession into the last 15 seconds but we forced a lot of early shots.”
In the first half TWU shot just 24 percent from the field. On defense the Pioneers posed some problems for the Zias and controlled the boards. They trailed 19-30 at halftime.
After the break, TWU led by one point in the final minutes of action before ENMU completed an old fashioned three-point play to take the lead and game.
“We had the lead in the last two minutes but didn’t play real smart,” added Gabbard.
Matalya McBath led TWU with 17 points, four assists and three steals. Ashley Browning and Adriana Martin added eight points each.
TWU concludes the season on Feb. 26 at West Texas A&M at 7:00 p.m.
