ASU COMES BACK TO BEAT TWU
DENTON,
Texas – The Texas Woman’s University basketball
team controlled the first half of action but No. 8 Angelo State
came back in the second to defeat the Pioneers, 85-66, in Lone
Star Conference South Division action.
TWU (10-14, 3-9) had their way in the first half against the top team in the
LSC but the Rambelles came out of halftime and took over.
“We had a great first half. Offensively, we were patient and made them
work to defend us and defensively we did a good job on their post players,” head
coach Devin Gabbard said. “The second half was a different type of game;
we couldn’t get in a flow. We didn’t create scoring opportunities
and they went on a run.”
The Pioneers led throughout most of the first half with solid defense and bench
play. Megan McCrummen, Lindsey McCutcheon and Whitney Bracey made key plays
for TWU off the bench. McCrummen had an old fashioned three-point play at the
6:45 mark to put the Pioneers up by six. On the ensuing possession, McCutcheon
snagged an offensive board and put it back in. Right before intermission, Bracey
added another three-point play to put TWU ahead, 35-28.
In the second half, ASU went on a run with two easy baskets by Natalja Tsurbakova
and a three-pointer. The Rambelles steadily increased their lead to 19 points
on the way to their 22nd win of the season.
“We would fight to get back in the game but they would respond with an
easy basket and some key threes to put the game out of reach. Both teams played
hard but we didn’t hit the shots in the second half,” added Gabbard.
Matalya McBath paced TWU with 16 points, four assists, three rebounds and three
steals. Ashley Browning joined her in double-figures with 13 points. Kelley
Humphries led the rebounding efforts with six.
Tsurbakova led all scorers with 27 points and eight rebounds.
TWU concludes the season on the road. First they are at Eastern New Mexico
on Feb. 24 at 8:00 p.m. before playing at West Texas A&M on Feb. 26 at
7:00 p.m.
