BALANCED WILDCATS DEFEAT PIONEERS
DENTON , Texas – Matalya McBath scored a game-high 27 points but it wasn’t enough as Abilene Christian beat Texas Woman’s 67-78 in Lone Star Conference action.
“This was a real streaky game of runs for both teams. We waited too long to bump up the defensive intensity and play which really cost us,” head coach Devin Gabbard said. “I think that turnovers and shot selection hurt us. Our turnovers led to easy baskets for them and the shot selection led to our poor shooting percentage. We weren’t taking bad shots, just taking them early in the possession.”
The Pioneers (10-13, 3-8) ran into trouble early when McBath picked up her second foul at the 12:39 mark with the game tied at 11. When she reentered the game with 6:33 on the clock they were behind 18-33. Next McBath scored four points, all free throws, in a minute before picking up her third foul and sitting the remainder of the half.
“I wasn’t real happy with all the fouls. There was never a tempo in the game,” added Gabbard. “Abilene Christian has a real balanced team which is a big tribute to them.”
TWU trailed by 12 points at halftime but the Wildcats built a 25-point lead in the second half on the way to victory. The Pioneers were within seven points with 22 seconds remaining but ACU shut the door by making all their free throws down the stretch.
McBath put up 27 points in just 25 minutes of action and was a perfect 12-for-12 from the charity stripe. Teneisha McKinney and Ashley Browning also scored in double figures for TWU. McKinney had 12 points, seven rebounds, four steals and two blocks. Browning chipped in 10 points with eight rebounds.
ACU had three players in double-digits as well led by Kierstan Barbee with 15. The Wildcats also had four others with at least seven points.
The Pioneers host No. 8 Angelo State on Feb. 19 at 3:00 p.m. in their last home contest of the season.
