DEFENSIVE INTENSITY EQUALS VICTORY FOR TWU
DENTON,
Texas – The Texas Woman’s University basketball
team led by as many as 27 points behind a solid defensive effort
en route to a 74-57 victory over Midwestern State.
The Pioneers (10-12, 3-7) put an end to their nine-game losing streak and turned
the tables on the Lady Indians from their previous match-up on Feb. 5.
TWU’s defense sparked a quick start and 4-0 lead before MSU got into
the game. Matalya McBath, Ashley Browning and Valery Redfearn led the way with
eight, eight and seven points, respectively at halftime.
“I think tonight was the best defensive effort I have ever seen from our
kids,” head coach Devin Gabbard stated. “We held Midwestern to just
57 points and percentage wise that has to be their yearly low or close to it.
The intensity on the defensive end was great.”
MSU outscored TWU, 37-34, in the second half but it wasn’t enough to
make up the 20-point deficit from the first half of action.
McBath had a game-high 23 points with eight rebounds and seven assists. Browning
and Redfearn each had 15 points. Redfearn added six rebounds and four blocked
shots to her season-high point total. Teneisha McKinney and Whitney Bracey
also had seven rebounds.
“A lot of people stepped up. Valery scored in double digits for the second
game in a row. Ashley and Matalya are holding their own as well, getting their
average and then some,” Gabbard added. “On the boards, Matalya, Teneisha
and Whitney all had seven or eight boards.”
The Pioneers are back in action on Feb. 17 hosting Abilene Christian beginning
at 7:00 p.m.
